Question: I'm from the Philippines
and very much interested in planting flowering trees here. Can I plant cherry
blossoms here? What flowering trees can I plant here?
Answer: In your tropical climate, you have a lot of choices in flowering plants and trees, but unfortunately, cherry blossoms are not one of them, as they require cold to set bud. Not being sure of what the laws are in your area as far as planting non-native plants, I hesitate to recommend anything specific. My best advice is to look around and see what others have, check out nurseries, and do a little research on what flowering trees would do best in your tropical environment. Native is always better than non-native, and you might consider trees with nice foliage colors, trees with edible fruits, or trees with unusual forms. Don't count anything out because you might miss a real gem simply because it does not put out flowers in the traditional sense. Choose wisely and you will never be disappointed.
